Nike Air Max 90 ‘Viotech’ | Now Available

24.07.19 General

The Viotech story first takes us back to the year 2001, in a pre ‘internet-sneakerhead’ time when dial-up was king and it wasn’t as easy as it is today to track down regional exclusive releases from abroad without travelling thousands of miles.

During this time Nike’s Japanese Division was in the process of introducing their co.jp initiative, which created colourways only available in very select locations in the country. One of these was known as the Rainbow, which launched alongside a trio pack called the ‘Ugly Ducking’ pack. The ‘Rainbow’ was the standout model of that time – a sneaker that featured a clash of colours that all bounced off of one another. The design just worked and subsequently, it’s now seen as an icon.

This season, Nike has revisited this iconic colourway and introduced it to another one of their legendary silhouettes – the Air Max 90. Using this much sought-after Japanese exclusive as inspiration, Nike has used a premium suede upper and brought to it the same bold colour-blocking theme that made that Dunk Low so popular. One of the stand out colours amongst these colour blocks was known as Viotech. This was the name Nike gave to the purple shade that was found on both the sidewall and the sole unit of the Dunk Low and features across the toe vamp on the Viotech 2.0.

With the introduction of the Air Max 90 Viotech we teamed up with our good friend and illustrator, Mark Ward (@markwardstudio).

Hailing from South London during the post internet 80’s, Marks inspiration is very clear to see. With all the Americana skateboard magazines he was reading as a child, he soon realised that the sunny Californian environment being depicted in the imagery didn’t reflect the London environment he found himself.

With this, Mark now brings that Californian sunshine to his illustrations and this was no different for his latest work with us. For this launch, Mark brought his distinct style and incorporated it to this latest member of the Viotech family.

The Nike Air Max Viotech 2.0 is now available in-store and online.

Nike Air Max 1 ‘Sketch to Shelf’ | Now Available

19.07.19 General

Originally sketched up in 1987, the Air Max 1, designed by Tinker Hatfield, was the first time Nike had ventured into visible Air cushioning on a trainer.

Previously an architect for Nike, Tinker became inspired by the Pompidou Centre in Paris, a building famous for being built inside out. This vision was the starting point for what was to become the Air Max 1. The idea was to make the inner workings of the Air units – which had already been in use with Nike since 1979 – visible.

This latest edition recalls those original sketches and looks back to the process from sketching to being shelved. The ‘Sketch to Shelf’ features several handwritten details which describe areas of the trainer that needed to be looked at, redesigned or were ready to go.

Special patterns are visible throughout this edition, mainly the scribbled colour blocks that pay homage to the original University Red colourway from 1987. Other details include the loss of the branding on the rear of the right shoe, which has been replaced with a handwritten date and signature from Tinker Hatfield. Sticking with the approach of this being an item of process, the inside reads ‘Sketch, property of Nike, not for resale’.

Now available in-store and online in limited quantities.

Nike x Stranger Things ‘Hawkins High’ Pack | Now Available

26.06.19 General

Nike is no stranger to collaborating with fictional places and people. Just last year, the Swoosh partnered up with the Creed movie franchise on an Adonis Creed collection, and the Back to the Future Nike Mags continue to elude many collectors.

Now, the brand has teamed up with Netflix’s blockbuster series Stranger Things on a range of footwear and apparel. And while the show might be make-believe, the sneakers are very real and uncommonly stylish.

Taking place in the fictional small town of Hawkins, Indiana during the 1980s, the show is itself packed-full of vintage references. The collaborative collection highlights three of the Swoosh’s most beloved silhouettes: the Cortez, Blazer, and Tailwind. During the ‘80s, the sporting world was undergoing an aesthetic reinvention, with athletic footwear becoming more style-forward by the year. All three of these Nike styles helped to lead that brigade.

Drop 1 takes its name from the Hawkins High school featured in the sci-fi series, which is set in a small Midwestern town called Hawkins, located in Roane County, Indiana.

The Hawkins High Pack sees the school’s green and orange colour scheme and its tiger mascot used in designs that channel the style of a retro sports kit.

Nike x Stranger Things ‘Hawkins High’ Pack is Now available in-store and online. Sizes range from UK3.5 – UK12 (including half sizes), priced at £95.
