HIGHSNOBIETY x ASICS Gel Kayano 5 Retro | Event Recap

23.10.18 General

Last week we were in Berlin to celebrate the re-release of of the iconic ASICS GEL-KAYANO 5, The silhouette first launched in 1999, the GEL-KAYANO 5 was the 5th iteration in the Kayano series and appeared six years after the first GEL-KAYANO model which was a worthy successor to the GT-Cool Xpress and X-Caliber GT.

Designer Toshikazu Kayano based his iconic design for the first GEL-KAYANO on the mighty stag beetle and the silhouette has been evolving ever since. From the samurai-inspired GEL-KAYANO 11 to the Gran Turismo-inspired 20th anniversary edition, the shoe has continued to drive innovation year after year.

Each GEL-KAYANO design was unlike anything that had come before it using ground-breaking ASICS technology to provide runners with speed, comfort and confidence.

With an introductory meal, photography activation and a Japanese-themed party in the heart of Berlin. Fashion and streetwear alumni flew in from around the world to be a part of this special moment, giving the iconic shoe the re-introduction, it deserves.

On arrival we were greeted by both ASICS and HighSnobiety representatives, the initial meal gave weary travellers the time to get to know one another, talk all that is ASICS and mull over what would be a very unique dining experience to come.

Hosted at Berlins Zenkichi Restaurant, you’ll wander through a lobby that looks like a bamboo forest, to immersive dining spaces composed of small, semi-private booths. Zenkichi’s perk is its all-embracing conceptual design where guests enjoy a seasonal Omakase menu, seated in alcoves. This menu is here to make it easier for you, the 8-course tasting menu will let you enjoy all the varieties the kitchen has to offer, just sit down, relax and await the plates being spread in front of you to enjoy.

The following day, we set out early to meet individuals that had been assigned our ‘Berlin Guides’ each with their own list of unique photography spots. In groups of no more than 10, we walked from location to location scouting spots that would prove ideal for both the GEL-KAYANO 5 and tell the best story of Berlin through visual communication. After our busy morning, all the groups met at ‘Cocolo Ramen’, a temple for Ramen worshipers where we were treated to authentic noodle soups whilst revelling in the creative outcomes from the morning shoots.

Later that evening, honouring the brand’s Japanese roots, ASICS brought various elements of Japanese culture together under one roof at Berlin’s infamous nightclub IPSE. Guests were treated to a selection of complimentary drinks, Golden Gai-style food stalls, and could battle it out on 90s arcade classics. The soundtrack for the evening was supplied by Soichi Terada, DJ ONONiiONIONIION, and the Highsnobiety Sound system.

Thanks to ASICS and HighSnobiety for having us on the trip and to celebrate another chapter in the Kayano legacy.

Nike Air VaporMax 2.0 Safari Pack ‘Zebra’ | Now available

19.10.18 General

It’s no secret that Nike often look to the animal kingdom when it comes to choosing the designs and colour-ways of their shoes. The Swoosh has sat over animal camouflage on a number of well known silhouettes, such as the Air Max 1 and 95, which were famously given an animalistic makeover for several of Nike’s collaboration with Atmos. However it isn’t just the big name collaborations that this treatment, as many in-line Nike products also utilise animal prints in an effective way, such as the Nike Air Safari SE.

This month another sillhoutte is being given the animal look, in the form of the VaporMax Safari Pack, beginning with an eye-catching Zebra themed colour-way with more iterations to follow in the coming weeks. Although the VaporMax is a few years old at this point, it’s still one of Nike’s most contemporary silhouettes both in regards to both the design and the technology utilised, giving the shoe the animal print treatment ties it in with the OG’s while simultaneously driving the motif forward.

The Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit 2.0 ‘Zebra’ features a head-turning white and black Primeknit upper, with an equally striking zebra print heel-tab and blacked out 360 Air bubble. Sizes range from UK7 – UK11 and the show is priced at £170. Available to purchase in-store and online.

Nike x Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP | Now Available

17.10.18 General

Following on from the release of the UNDERCOVER x Nike Element React 87 Jun Takahashi continues his creative partnership with the Swoosh with the Nike Zoom Fly SP Gyakusou.

Rather than put the UNDERCOVER twist on another silhouette, Takahashi has decided to further his running and lifestyle venture – Gyakusou. An avid runner himself Takahashi drew inspiration from his runs in Tokyo’s Yoyogi park in order to inform his athletic partnership with Nike.

The namely loosely translates to ‘running in reverse’ and is a nod to how Takahashi runs anti-clockwise around Yoyogi park, while everyone else runs clockwise. This small act of counter-cultural defiance is carried over into the Gyakusou brand and how they go against the traditional athletic wear norms.

It was only a matter of time before the Gyakusou brand turned to footwear, and the Nike Zoom Fly SP Gyakusou does not disappoint. The silhouette comes in a Blue Nebula, Ink and Black colour-ways, with the translucent upper being dressed in cross bone motif. The shoe also features Nike React technology, ensuring comfort and durability.

The Nike Zoom Fly SP Gyakusou | Now available in-store and online. Sizes range from UK6 – UK12 (including half sizes), priced at £160.

Since 2005, Pharrell Williams has propelled his Billionaire Boys Club brand to new heights through consistently chalking up ideas for new sneakers and apparel respectively.

Adapting to the times of the sneaker and fashion culture, his latest hit in footwear has been his collection of Hu NMD which celebrates the hues of humanity. From lifestyle adidas Human Race NMD to hiking style Hu NMD Trail, Pharrell caters to various consumers.

His upcoming release of the Billionaire Boys Club Hu NMD and the Tennis Hu V2 fuses his own entity with the Three Stripes once again. Predominantly sporting a full primeknit upper, a combination of navy, yellow and red stripes inspired by archival collegiate stripe details.

Billionaire Boys Club was founded on the idea that wealth is of the heart and mind, not the pocket. This is evident through ‘Mind’ and ‘Heart’ heavily embroidered on the respective uppers on the left and right shoe. A gold trefoil on the leather heel tab finishes of the details of the upper. This is sat on top of a white BOOST midsole for premium cushioning and a rugged outsole to ensure the wearer a lot of traction.

Footpatrol Recap | HYPEFEST 2018

13.10.18 General

Last weekend we were lucky enough to fly out to New York for the first ever HYPEFEST and explore the culture that drives us and link up with some of the brands we love. On the surface the event was a way for brands to showcase new ideas and consumers to get ahead of the game, by seeing the next big thing before anyone else but it needed up being so much more.

HYPEFEST brought the streetwear and sneaker community together to celebrate fashion, music, art, food and the everything else that drives the culture. Huge names from the scene were in attendance such as Futura 2000, Jeff Staple, Hiroshi Fujiwara and many more!

By far the highlight for us was the Puma Cell Design Lab, which showcased the brands upcoming Puma Cell Endura rollout and showcased the pinnacle of their retro design. The installation featured a HYPEFEST exclusive colour-way of the Puma Cell Endura, as well as a preview of their forthcoming Cell Venom line. Aside from checking out what’s to come next from the Puma Sport Style range, we were also able to sit down with Shigeyuki Kunii, who designed the HYPEFEST exclusive Cell Endura.

adidas Originals Never Made | Coming soon to Footpatrol

09.10.18 General

Sole swapping is something that has been practiced by brands and sneakerheads for a long time. Taking the upper of a classic silhouette and putting it on the distinct sole of another, has had some very interesting results in the past, and adidas Originals are set to take this experimentation to the next level.

The Never Made collection from adidas Originals debuted at this weekend’s hypefest and showed quite clearly that the past and future can co-exist. The Never Made collections dives deep into adidas’s vault, pairing some of the most well known silhouettes from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s with the brand’s most advanced modern technology.

We were lucky enough to be invited to the adidas archive in Herzogenaurach, to see first hand how the future and past come together. Among the archives we were able to see pieces of history (such as Muhammad Ali’s boxing boots) as well as adidas silhouttes throughout the years, (including our 2008 take on the ZX800).

The collections features striking pairings, such as the the I-5923 on a 4D sole and a Country upper paired with a Kamanda sole, as well as more low-key swaps – such as the Rising Star x R1 – that seem almost made for each other.

The Never Made capsule will feature Marathon x I-5923, Micropacer x R1, Boston Super x R1, FYW 98 x Crazy BYW and ZX930 x EQT pairs. As well as the aforementioned I-4D and Country x Kamanda swaps.

Coming soon to Footpatrol, stay tuned for further launch information..!

Puma Suede x SONRA | Now Available

05.10.18 General

Few people have impacted sneaker culture in the way that Hikmet Sugoer has. As both the co-founder/driving force behind European sneaker boutique, Solebox, and as the founder and designer of the brand SONRA, Sugoer has produced some incredibly sought after work.

Sugoer’s tenure with Solebox ended in 2016. However the work he and his team produced there has left a huge mark on the industry for example colour-blocking wouldn’t be as popular without the Purple Devils, Toothpastes and Nazar Eye to name a few. His current venture with SONRA continues to contribute to that culture.

His latest project being an ode to his upbringing with the Puma Suede x Sonra collaboration. Although this isn’t the first time the two minds have met, this collab has a particular significance given that it’s to celebrate the shoe’s 50th anniversary.

Sugoer first became aware of the Puma Suede in 1984, and like most people his age at the time, instantly fell in love with the silhouette. It was this nostalgia that informed the direction of the collab.

The Puma Suede x SONRA  features a hairy suede upper and faux snakeskin detailing (a throwback to Sugoer’s first collaboration with the brand) with a SONRA lace lock. The upper is dressed in a unique Lily Green colourway, that blends the green from vintage Puma boxes and SONRA’s ‘Grasshopper’ colourway.

The Puma Suede x SONRA is Now Available online. Sizes range from UK7 – UK11 (including half sizes), priced at £100.
