Bad Bunny x adidas Forum ‘Back to School’ | Raffle Closed!

02.09.21 General

When it comes to adidas, a stand out silhouette has been the Forum. Gaining a bit of a resurgence this last year, adidas has continued to experiment with the basketball classic with a host of inline features and collaborations. One of those stand out performers and most sought after has to be the collaboration with Bad Bunny.

After lending his unique design style to the silhouette previously in the year, the duo return once again to build on a time of year that for many signals the time, ‘Back to School’. Building on inspiration from his own childhood and his experiences of growing up, Bad Bunny aims to reimagine the everyday uniform.

Aiming to build on individual expressions, Bad Bunny takes the traditional black shoe form to the Forum for a blacked out silhouette that brings small details to make everyone and anyone stand out from the crowds! The triple black premium leather upper has been overlaid with suede and the Forum buckle fastening. Co-branded sock-liners, polka-dot laces, and Bad Bunny’s instantly recognisable logo are just some of the details that make this Forum unique.

Air Jordan IV ‘Tour Yellow’ | Raffle Closed!

24.08.21 General

For the first time ever, the sought-after Air Jordan IV ‘Lightning’ is set to retro. For avid Jordan collectors, this iteration of the timeless AJIV is deemed as a “grail” due to its limitedness, colour and time of release.

In 2006, the AJIV Lightning released alongside the “Thunder” version which were inspired by MJ’s motorcycle teams. This commemorated Jumpman’s move to online retail as well as a push for LS – Lifestyle releases. Both exlsuive to online, the Lightning 4 released with a t-shirt whilst the Thunder came alongside a rare jacket.

Ever since 2006, the Lightning never saw a retro whilst the Thunder did in 2012. This kept the demand for the Lightning high and calls for a retro were coming thick and fast.

Now in 2021, alas, the wait is finally coming to a close. With a monochrome upper of nubuck ‘Tour Yellow’, the latest iteration is close to its original predecessor with keeping the grey hits and further nubuck on the wings. Grey details on the Jumpman tongue and heel as well as the outsole whilst black contrasts are on the netting. An updated look on the box is an addition to celebrate the return of a classic.

To celebrate the launch, we met up with collector Tom Ray who’s collection… archive is one to behold! Turning up in a rather fitting Chevy Camero, Tom couldn’t wait to see what Jordan Brand could achieve with this retro.

Footpatrol: Tom, long time no see. How have you been?

Tom: Hi. Thanks for having me! As well as can be really in these mad times we currently live in. I’ve been fortunate enough to stay fit and well over the past however months, and glad to see that things are starting to get back to some form of normality. Good to finally get out and talk about sneakers to someone, and have a reason to wear something nice on foot once again. I know it doesn’t pale in comparison to what some folk have had to deal with, but it’s the small things!

FP: We normally ask everyone that we interview to give a little intro on themselves. You though, you are a pretty well known face in the UK sneaker scene! So for those enthusiasts who haven’t quite yet been blessed with seeing your collection. Could you give them a bit of a run down?

Tom: I’m just a normal guy from the Midlands, who really loves sneakers! You’ll find me at the majority of sneaker events up + down the country, and I’m always willing to discuss absolutely anything, whether that’s sneakers, sports or even the weather! As for my collection, I’d like to think I have a pair for everyone’s taste, whether that’s the latest “hyped” release, or an OG release from the 90s. Unless you’re looking for black pairs. Anyone who knows me, knows that I like colour, whether that’s on feet, or what I usually wear.

FP: What got you into collecting?

Tom: It started whilst I was at University in Chester, which feels like a VERY long time ago. I was a very shy/quiet person before then, and I’d say I struggled to express myself really. I met some weird + wonderful people during my time there, who really shaped me to who I am today. During my time at Uni, I developed an interest in brands such as BAPE, BBC + Almost Famous. My choice in clothing got loud, colourful and unique, and my choice in footwear soon followed.

FP: You brought a really nice mix of pairs down to the shoot! In terms of specifics though the Nike Zoom FP in the Transformers packaging… Where did you manage to find those?

Tom: I’m a HUGE Transformers fan, mainly Bumblebee, so much so, I have a tattoo on my leg of the great robot! They were released to coincide with the release of the second live action film back in 2009, and they have always been a pair I’ve had my eye on. From what I read, they only released over in US, meaning I had to buy via other means. Thankfully, I got what I deem a great price in the end. The packaging alone made it a bargain! I have always felt we needed more Nike x Transformers collaborations, even more so when the son (Travis Knight) of the co-founder of Nike (Phil Knight) became the director of the latest Bumblebee movie. Alas, nothing came of it, apart from a good, fun film!

FP: What about Jordans, you got some crazy wild pairs! Tokyo 5’s just to name one of them. Where did the appreciation for that start?

Tom: I’m no basketball fan. I’ve seen Space Jam more times than I have basketball games. However, I know full well that Michael Jordan is the GOAT. Can you even be into sneakers if you do not have even a slight interest in Jordans? I love pairs you do not see often. I love having a story behind them too, like the Tokyo 5s, a pair I picked up over in Japan whilst I was over there on a trip. Also, no matter what the “current trend” is, Jordans are timeless. They will never “go out of fashion”. That’s mighty impressive considering how quick trends can change!

FP: Now we have to talk about the car! Would you say the Camaro you brought down to the shoot is your dream car?

Tom: Dream car, yes. I’m no car fan, I’d struggle to tell you much about them. Probably not the best sort of car to have then, as some of the questions I get asked, I’m clueless! It gets me from A to B, is about as much as I can tell you! It’s the car I’ve always wanted, and I’m grateful to have it, and grateful to friends and family who helped me sort it out. You know who you are. x

FP: Can’t help but make an instant connection to Bumblebee, was this an intentional thing when it came to speccing?!

Tom: Yes. The only way I’d have had a Camaro, was if it looked like Bumblebee. It’s actually a Transformers Edition Camaro, styled after the vehicle seen in the “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” Movie. Unfortunately, no Megan Fox came with it.

FP: Let’s revert back to shoes. The AJ4 Lightning. What are your thoughts now having seen the retro?

Tom: I’m just glad they have actually released! I think every year, for the past however many years, it’s been rumored, and I’ve had my hopes dashed when nothing came of the rumors. I did not actually believe it this year, until I had them in hand! I’m also pleased that everyone can have a chance at having a pair. It’s been a while since the last release, and there are a lot of new ‘heads out there now. I expect these to do well.

FP: Compared to the OG would you say you’re happy with how these came out?

Tom: I’d say Jordan Brand has done a tip top job! Very minimal changes, but nothing you’d really notice unless inspecting closely! And that box is stunning! I’m just happy to get a fresh pair on foot. Now if only we had nice weather to truly show these off…..

FP: Is there a AJ4 you would like to see make a return?

Tom: DB4. Not only for a good cause, but also some great little features on them. That Superman tongue tab gets me every time. Another pair that was released much more recently, is the OW4. Lovely pair, and I’d love another chance to grab!

FP: What about a Tom Ray AJ4 collab, what would that look like?

Tom: Oh man, the choices! I’d say the Lightnings are very close to what I’d do, colourwise at least. Maybe some premium materials on there, faux-fur upper would be right up my street. Autobots logo on the outsole, which i know can be done! Seen it on the Mark Wahlberg x Jordan 5. Speaking of which, if he wishes to part with a pair, drop me a message please! Worth a shot eh?

FP: Tom, thank you so much for coming down and spending time with us! Before we let you go, is there anything you would like to share to the Footpatrol readers and followers?

Tom: Thank you for having me, and letting me showcase some pairs. As I said, it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to talk and just let loose about sneakers. As for everyone else, keep doing your thing, buying pairs you like, and I hope to speak to + see many of you over the coming months.

Peace.

when it comes to streetwear and those creatives that have moulded themselves within it, you don’t need to look far to find Joshua Vides. Having become well known within the scene for his black and white illustration style graphics, his playful nature was an easy concept for us all to get on board with and enjoy.

Taking this one step further, back in 2018, Vides began a new avenue with the launch of his design studio, ‘Reality to Idea’. This served as a platform where his graphic design background and his love of streetwear could come together as one for projects such as this latest one with Havaianas.

Inspired by the spirit that surrounds Venice Beach, the Reality to Idea team have reworked the Tradi Zori and Flip Flop styles bringing in that instantly recognisable black and white illustration style.

Footpatrol: Guys, welcome! After spending most of my lunches here it’s nice to sit down and have a chat properly! How are you both doing?

Soho Joe (Brian) : We are good thank you!

FP: You are both well known faces in the Soho area. How did you find yourselves in the hospitality industry?

Soho Joe (Brian) : Living in South Ken. Cafe Nero was new, we looked at what they were doing and how they were operating. We used to go in there to buy coffees and croissants and just decided we could do this much better! So we opened our first place in South Kensington.

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : For me. I have grown up all my life around parents in the catering industry. It inspired me to open my own restaurant and have been here ever since!

FP: Have you always been big foodies?

Soho Joe (Brian) : We’ve always been into food!

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : My mums a really good cook!

Soho Joe (Brian) : A master cook!

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : She has a Maltese background and makes loads of Mediterranean food. We have just grown up having these great family dinners. We just love food to be honest with you.

FP: Is mum the instigator for what goes on the menus then in that case?

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : I would say she probably gets the final say definitely haha!

FP: Is that the same at Soho Joes?

Soho Joe (Brian) : YEP!

FP: What encouraged you guys to have a father/son lead joint business?

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : It evolved naturally. I have always helped out in my mum and dad’s restaurant. It felt like there was a natural progression for me to go and open my own place. It’s been good though! Being closer to mum and dad is nice as they have always given me loads of support, helped me get set up and guided me through the process of running my own place.

FP: What’s it like having your son  jump on board the family business? Must be quite a nice feeling.

Soho Joe (Brian) : It’s awful……. I only joke, it’s great!

FP: And are you both happy with how it’s been going? I know just before we did the interview you mentioned this was only meant to be a 2 year venture and it’s been close to what 9 years now?

Soho Joe (Brian) : Yeah it has been really good! I must admit though, Covid has marred it a little bit.

FP: Well hopefully that won’t be the case going forward and it all picks up properly again.

One thing I always noticed is that you both are incredibly talkative and involved with your customers. How important is that to you guys?

Soho Joe (Brian) : Yeah I mean we are just social people anyway. Some customers the other day said they went to a restaurant in Brewer Street, they mentioned that the food was great but the staff were cold and didn’t bring them a good overall experience. We don’t do it for those reasons so much, but being naturally social people we just want to talk to everyone and anyone doesn’t matter if they’re a customer or not a customer. We will talk as much to a bin man as we would a customer.

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : I think Soho, although it is in the centre of London, does have a real community. You can walk down the street and wave to 10 people that you know just on Berwick. It’s just nice that everyone knows everyone and creates that almost village atmosphere.

Soho Joe (Brian) : Here’s a story for you. There’s a chap who lives in an enormous and probably the most expensive house in Soho. A big agent knocked on his door and said to him we got someone that would like to buy your house off you. He said to me that he thought about it for about 10mins, thinking about maybe buying a Lordship of the Manor in the Cotswolds. I said to him, you are already Lord of the Manor in Soho! Who do you know in the Cotswolds, this is your village. – I think that says it all really about the area.

FP: Did he keep the house in the end?

Soho Joe (Brian) : He is still there now!

FP: Amazing!

FP: What about this then. Do you guys ever have any friendly competition with business or is it more to do with supporting each other?

Soho Joe (Brian) : No, it’s different.

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : Nothing. It’s more the support as it’s a whole family thing. My two brothers, my sister who lives in Madrid still help out from time to time on online stuff and my mum does as much as we do.

FP: How did you piece together the menus?

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : We used to live just off Edgware road, so I grew up eating at all of those Lebanese restaurants. Through that we knew the chef Habibi, who makes all the chilli sauce, garlic sauce, houmous, falafel and all that using his family recipes. We actually got our rotisserie oven from the London Olympic village! They were selling all their equipment.

Soho Joe (Brian) : There’s a good story about the one that came before that.

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : Haha yeah! So we actually used to have two rotisseries. One was so big and when we switched it on as a tester to cook some chickens, it completely melted the ceiling and you can still see it there now! But yeah just through knowing Habibi that helped guide the direction in what the menu was going to be. It’s changed a lot over time, things have been added and taken off as we have found out what people like and don’t like.

FP: What about the business names, how did you come up with both Cookhouse and Soho Joes?

Soho Joe (Brian) : We had about 20 or 30 names to start. Between us we thought about which would be the best fit. Soho Joes really stuck with us off the back of the 1950s record by Andy Williams – ‘ The House of Bamboo’. It’s almost become a mini brand, I see our stickers all over the place. It wasn’t the initial plan but that’s how it panned out.

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : We really just wanted to keep the link. Soho Joe being the first one, we wanted to make sure people knew it was the same brand and same family. Cookhouse is just another word for Kitchen and there are already 3 of those in London!

FP: Let’s run through some burning quick fire questions then!

Who’s the better cook between you two?

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : Me.

Soho Joe (Brian) : *points at son*

FP: Best thing on the menu?

Soho Joe (Brian) : We got a Buffolina pizza that everybody raves about!

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : Halloumi Wrap is probably the most popular thing we do.

FP: Who’s got the best chefs?

Soho Joe (Brian) : That is a difficult one. In Cookhouse, you have Habibi who is such a supreme and an icon Lebanese chef. In Soho Joe at the moment, in the 20 years I have been doing this, the pizzas have never been this good before.

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : Yeah the chef in Soho Joe as the moment is the best they have ever had. Whilst Habibi has been with me here since forever! We get people coming in saying the Garlic sauce is like no other!

Soho Joe (Brian) : Habibi is his second father haha!

FP: Choice of drink with a meal?

Soho Joe (Brian) : I am a man of simpler taste, just a beer.

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : I would say a Negroni.

FP: Thank you so much for letting us come by and talk to you both. It’s been amazing to hear about the backstories you guys have! Before we let you go, is there anything you would like to share with any of the Footpatrol readers and followers?

Cookhouse Joe (Sean) : Anything else you wanna say dad?

Soho Joe (Brian) : The day is made much easier wearing Nike trainers!

Frequent Players Guest Mix 028 | Bok Bok

13.08.21 General

London based DJ and label manager, Bok Bok is no stranger to the club night scene and has hosted some of the most engaging events through his label Night Slugs.

With the UKs club scene slowly opening itself up again. We wanted to take some time to catch up with Bok Bok to hear about his exciting new ventures, where his love for the music scene began and find out what’s next on his radar.

To top it off we have also teamed up with Bok Bok to produce an exclusive mix for Frequents to give your easy reading and Friday feeling!

Footpatrol: Bok Bok, we really appreciate your time in sitting with us for this interview. How are you?

Bok Bok: That’s cool, I’m ok thanks. I just had some mad flu. I think all the OG viruses are back now we’re outside and all mixing again and immune systems need to get back in shape. Other than that I just been working hard on my 2 labels.

FP: You have been part of the music world for 10+ years. Could you start off with giving the Footpatrol readers and followers a bit of background on how you got into Djing?

Bok Bok: Yea sure, so I first started DJing grime off white labels back in ’03-04. I started on a station called UTZ that a friend of mine ran out of some bando in Walthamstow. I had a graveyard slot after Slu Dem Crew. One thing led to another and I got to playing at squat parties and forcing grime sets on the electro and dubstep parties my friends were throwing at Redstar in Camberwell. Eventually we started Night Slugs and the rest is history.

FP: We saw you do a Boiler Room Lockdown session last year. Have you had the chance to do much else now that things are opening even more now?

Bok Bok: Not yet you know, all my gigs are resuming late August onwards. Trust me I’m ready to goooo

FP: It must really motivate you to want to further perfect your craft by running Night-Slugs Record Label. What’s it like co-running your own label?

Bok Bok: I run it solo nowadays. I also started a new label this year, called AP Life. Both labels are a huge motivation to keep discovering new music and both help to shape my DJ sets. It’s a lotttt of work but very rewarding.

FP: I read somewhere that Night Slugs started off as a club night before it became anything else?

Bok Bok: Yeah that’s true  – it was at that place Redstar in Camberwell that I mentioned earlier.  A lot of DJs had their start there – Oneman, Ben UFO, Pearson Sound, myself…  Night Slugs started as a club night there in ’08. We did about 3 or 4 events there before moving to East Village on Great Eastern Street (RIP) because they had a huge soundsystem and we wanted to get that Plastic People effect (another club that’s closed now) of a small dark room with a huge system where the subs make your chest rattle. All these venus are ancient history at this point!

FP: Could you tell us how that became what it is now?

Bok Bok: Basically over 2 years between 2008 and 2010 we went from DIY club night to launching a record label, because more and more we noticed that our friends were making original music inspired by all the influences from our DJ sets: grime, bassline, uk funky, r&b, Club music, Detroit electro, chicago house etc etc. None of that original material was being signed anywhere else. So we felt it was the logical next step to start putting it out ourselves. It’s been a journey since then but that’s pretty much still the mission statement.

FP: How would you best describe Night-Slugs as a label to people who may not have had the opportunity to hear about it?

Bok Bok: That’s a hard question. It’s a hub for club music of a lot of different shapes. It’s been so diverse over the years. Words fail me. There’s a huge archive of Rinse FM sets over the last 12 years that people can get into to discover more and all the releases are on Spotify, Boomkat, iTunes, etc etc so I encourage people who are interested to delve further, there’s really a whole world to discover there.

FP: You are also running a new label as well, AP__LIFE. How has that been going since it launched? Has it been a pretty easy process so far?

Bok Bok: Yea it’s been great thanks for asking. It’s my new baby. I’m running it with the help of croydon DJ/producer Nammy Wams and creative director Joh000_. It’s a lot of hard work like any good creative endeavour but it’s definitely made easier by having a creative team and not trying to do everything myself, a lesson I learnt from NS. But yea it’s a big big source of inspiration for me, including this mix I made for you guys.

FP: What made you want to launch a second label?

Bok Bok: Making new material myself that didn’t feel like it fit with Night Slugs. Getting to know Nammy Wams and wanting to release his material. Also NS has been really diverse over the years and I wanted to re-focus it on specifically music for the club, whereas AP is kinda different to that, it’s much less about escapism and more about the city and world around us. I wanted to engage with all that separate of NS.

FP: And in terms of your sound specifically, would you categorise yourself into one genre or would you say you’re a bit of a mix?

Bok Bok: I’m definitely a mix. I feel like I have a split personality between wanting to DJ gritty/cruddy and euphoric. I love grime and house music, Drill and Club etc etc. It’s definitely 2 sides of the same coin. My whole thing all these years has been trying to make them go together but lately I been giving both a bit of space. Having the 2 labels helps. But both still bleed over into the other, I can’t really help it.

FP: Bok Bok, thanks again for your time. Before we let you go is there anything else that you would like to share to the Footpatrol and Frequent players readers and listeners?

Bok Bok: I’ll just say it’s a mad world so ppl please try to be kind to each other. Love.

Salomon Festival | Event Recap

12.08.21 Performance

With events becoming more of a regular thing, it’s given us at Footpatrol the opportunity to get back out there and visit some of the brands we’re lucky to stock within our brand mix.

With that in mind, last week, we headed down to the Chilterns just north of London to visit Salomon and the return of their Salomon Festival. Situated out in some of the UK’s most stunning scenery, Salomon Festival offered an opportunity to learn everything about the brand and what they represent. With a mixture of talks throughout the day that involved nutrition guidance, essential packing for multiple day hikes and must know tips for trail running.

This was where our day started, picking up advice from some high respected athletes within the world of running before putting on our Salomon Ultra Glides, their latest trail runner for a hike through the forest taking in steep uphills with equally steep declines as once you go up, you’ve got to come back down. After this, we took on the Practical Trail Running Workshop that aimed to provide you with the skills needed for tackling some of the encounters you may face during a trail run.

The end of the day saw timed races take place which saw us take on the 5km race. To make the most of the day, we utilised the Salomon Testing Centre. This gave runners the opportunity to ditch their shoes and instead opt for something new, different or more innovative which as you can see, TEAMFP member Jake opted for the S/Lab Sense 8’s in their striking red colour way.

Massive thanks to Salomon for having us down for the day, take a closer look at the day below and we definitely can’t wait to see what the next Salomon adventure has in store.

Travis Scott x Fragment x Air Jordan 1 Low | Raffles Closed!

11.08.21 General

And just as the High raffle ends, the Low begins!

In similar fashion to the high, the familiar colour blocking has been kept in tack however, the Low does receive a few visual differences compared to the High… Where as the High received a White toe box, the Low makes do with a black leather wrapping around the toe. Both use a premium leather for the upper and both make the most of an aged midsole underneath with the Cactus Jack and Fragment Design logos carefully embossed on the heel to leave their mark on this unforgettable coming together.
