Sole swapping is something that has been practiced by brands and sneakerheads for a long time. Taking the upper of a classic silhouette and putting it on the distinct sole of another, has had some very interesting results in the past, and adidas Originals are set to take this experimentation to the next level.
The Never Made collection from adidas Originals debuted at this weekend’s hypefest and showed quite clearly that the past and future can co-exist. The Never Made collections dives deep into adidas’s vault, pairing some of the most well known silhouettes from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s with the brand’s most advanced modern technology.
We were lucky enough to be invited to the adidas archive in Herzogenaurach, to see first hand how the future and past come together. Among the archives we were able to see pieces of history (such as Muhammad Ali’s boxing boots) as well as adidas silhouttes throughout the years, (including our 2008 take on the ZX800).
The collections features striking pairings, such as the the I-5923 on a 4D sole and a Country upper paired with a Kamanda sole, as well as more low-key swaps – such as the Rising Star x R1 – that seem almost made for each other.
The Never Made capsule will feature Marathon x I-5923, Micropacer x R1, Boston Super x R1, FYW 98 x Crazy BYW and ZX930 x EQT pairs. As well as the aforementioned I-4D and Country x Kamanda swaps.
