Nike Air Max Zero QS | Now Available

30.07.18

Nike reveal to the world the shoe that came before the iconic Air Max 1 silhouette, the Nike Air Max Zero.

The Nike Air Max Zero is the first release of the AIr Max 1’s never-before-seen pre-concept design by then developer Mark Parker and designer Tinker Hatfield. Nike’s revoluntionary Air-Sole unit had already made its’ way into Nike footwear in the late ’70’s, which was a big hit among running enthusiasts. However Hatfield knew that wasn’t enough – the sensation of air underfoot needed to be expanded to other senses.

“I remember thinking about how we were making bigger and bigger Air-Sole units and that people needed to see and understand them”

Tinker Hatfield

What happened next is history: Hatfield travelled to Paris, where he saw the Centre Pompidou. Being inspired by the building’s unique inside-out design Hatfield returned to the Nike HQ in Oregon where he brought the concept of visible air to life in the form of a reevolutionary running shoe. The first silhouette to feature the visible Air-Sole unit was the Air Max 1. However the Air Max 1 was the result of many design iterations, with one of the earliest being the concept of the Air Max Zero. Unfortunately Tinker’s design was so ahead of its’ time it could not be produced – this is where the Air Max 1 was born.

Due to the phenomenon over the Air Max 1, the Air Max Zero silhouette was lost in the excitement of its’ younger brother. Fast-forward to 2015, the NSW design team stumbled across an interesting illustration upon searching for inspiration to celebrate the second annual Air Max Day…

The Nike Air Max Zero is due to release in-store & online on Thursday 26th March (available online from 8:00AM GMT). Sizes range from UK4.5 – UK11 (including half sizes) priced at £140.
